An Iron Age coin of Tasciovanus

Gold Quarter Stater circa 20BC - 10AD

RECORDING HISTORY

The obverse of the coin includes a crossed wreath design with the inscription TASCIO. The reverse shows an abstract 'Celtic-style' horse with the inscription CAM above. As this small coin was probably struck between 20 BC and 10 AD, it is the oldest recorded surviving record of the name of Camulodunon, the ancient name for Colchester. Although there are other specimens of this rare coin known, Colchester Museum did not have an example of it and with Mr Haffenden's help the museum is now able to share, with the local community one of it's earliest links to it's past.

Dave Haffenden

One of our team members has been very instrumental in helping our local museum with the acquisition of this important coin.

Dave found this coin, in the Manningtree area of Essex and as in keeping with our policy he recorded it with our local F.L.O. who at the time was Caroline McDonald.

The coin was then recorded on the national database with the Portable Antiquities Scheme.
